Issued by ESQUIRE MAGAZINE in 1942, “IL DUCE” depicts HERMANN GOERING leading BENITO MUSSOLINI in chains to his fate with DEATH and TOJO rounding out the procession. This series of posters was some of Szyk’s most impressive work and also issued in a smaller format as the Esky Post Card set which sold during WWII for 25c. This is an original print page from Esquire (on heavy stock) from 1942 and measures 14″ x 9 1/4″. The piece is in great shape and very suitable for framing. The colors are still bold and bright with only slight browning and/or sun shadowing around the edges. (There is also a very interesting art print on the reverse side – I’ve scanned it and you can see it in the large images below.)

The Polish born artist, Arthur Szyk was comissioned by Esquire to do six satirical caricatures of the wartime leaders. Szyk became a strong opponent of Adolf Hitler and his regime in Nazi Germany. He was an artist who so forcefully depicted the battle to defeat the Nazis and their Axis allies, that Eleanor Roosevelt declared him a “one man army against Hitler.”
