Description

Offered here is a patriotic art print entitled “AT YOUR COMMAND” by EARL McPHERSON, originally painted in 1942. The previous owner did a nice job of mounting on heavy duty foam core board and laminating the print, so I have no way to tell if it is a reproduction or an original. The print looks to be in exceptional shape, so I would lean towards reproduction if I had to guess. On the back there are two wooden braces for mounting purposes. The print measures 12″ x 17″ and it is ready to hang! Classic patriotic cheesecake from the war years!

Edgar Earl McPherson (1910-1993) had success at the Shaw-Barton Calendar Company before he was hired at Brown & Bigelow, where he created a unique pinup calendar that would become a standard in the industry. First published in 1943, his “Artist’s Sketch Pad” became a million-dollar seller. McPherson’s success with the Artist’s Sketch Pad was followed by another triumph: his two deck set of playing cards for Brown & Bigelow, called Win, Lose, or Draw. His diary-style calendar, Something to Remember, was his last success before he went off to war in 1944.

Discharged in 1946, he hooked up once again with Shaw-Barton and began the first of nine consecutive years of McPherson Sketch Book calendars for them. In 1954, Shaw-Barton published a book called Hunting With McPherson, a parody with pinup girls dressed as various hunting birds. The same year, the artist wrote and designed a best-selling how-to book entitled Pin-Up Art for the Waiter Faster Company.

In 1951, McPherson was stricken with polio, and his assistant, Jerry Thompson, took over the Sketch Book calendar series under the name T N. Thompson. In the early 1950s, McPherson had his own television show in Arizona; about 1960, he moved to Tahiti and then traveled widely in the South Pacific. He died in December 1993.
